Jozi Craft Beer Festival 2016
Another year has come and gone since we started Joburgbrew.com and walked through the glorious gates of our first official craft beer fest as a company. Our first festival was the 2015 Jozi Craft Beer Festival, it seemed fitting that it should be the festival closest to home where we would make our first stomp into the craft beer world.
Another year has come and gone since we started Joburgbrew.com and walked through the glorious gates of our first official craft beer fest as a company.
This year, Jozi Craft Beer Festival 2016 didn’t disappoint! Somehow, the day was as hot as I remember last years being, except this time, we had so much more to see and taste.
Of the mountain of brewers that regular all the top festivals in the region like CBC, Standaeven, Eversons or SMACK Republic, we now have the emerging segment of craft distillers that are starting to penetrate the scene too, such as Time Anchor Distillery, of Maboneng, Johannesburg and Inverroche of Stillbay, Cape Town. Though, besides the interesting new concoctions of the craft distillery bunch, it was disappointing to see nothing too new or exciting from the our craft brewers outside of CBC’s Harvest Lager and SMACK Republic’s Doppelganger Anti-stout, which are usually saved for the larger Capital Craft Fest later in June.
It seems that if there are any exciting and special crafts, the brewers may be saving them for Capital Craft Beer Festival in June, rather than the smaller Jozi Craft Fest. Makes brand sense I guess, let’s hope we get a bit more in month.
Outside the beer, as always Jozi Craft Beer Festival always manages to get some of the best up-and-coming music talents to showcase their stuff and keep the vibe going. Once you have your favourite litre of beer, it’s the done thing to pick a spot on the grass, pitch a blanket and either zone out or jump out to the tunes of the day. I somehow found myself next to the stage speaker letting my ears bleed to a band that I don’t recall, but they rocked!
Here are a few highlights from this years Jozi Craft Beer Festival adventure, hope to see you all next year. If you were there this year, let us know what you though of the festival in the comments section below:
